Reading Manga on the PSP

2009, March 18

kdopsp1For those curious about which manga is being displayed there, it’s Koe de Oshigoto! and you can get the goods at Despair Tea.

Yeah, I’ve been playing around on my PSP and finally did something like uploading manga to it. I find it pretty ironic that I use this portable system for stuff other than playing games. All the good games on the PSP really don’t attract my attention towards it as much as the other utilities the PSP provides. Reading manga is one of them. And despite what it looks like on the photo, it’s actually quite clear to read. This makes the PSP very ideal for me to bring around places now, since I’ve always kinda wanted to bring manga with me on trips and such, but often thought that packing this many books can really weigh down my luggage.

Converting manga to read well on the PSP isn’t difficult. All I really use is Photoshop and its macro functions to batch convert everything. So long as the dimensions are 480 width, it’s all good to go. The analog stick scrolls the page up and down while the L and R buttons move the pages backward and forward respectively. My only complaint really is that when you move to a new page, the screen is automatically centered at the middle of the page. I’ve looked around and saw no options to fix this. Eh…

I’m also a bit fond of reading it with the screen tall rather than width as seen below.

The only main issue with this is that some manga get more scrunched than others and makes the text more difficult to read. However, reading this way is a lot more comfortable (to me at least) and it saves a bit more space, too, (considering the images are generally smaller than their converted-screen-wide counterparts). I’ve been debating about turning the manga clockwise (D-Pad on bottom) or counterclockwise (D-Pad on top), really. Although the screenshot shows clockwise, I actually think I prefer counterclockwise more. You can press the R button with your left pinky (from a one hand position) and you can use your left thumb to carry the screen left and right with the analog stick. Feels a bit more awkward when you have it clockwise instead. Oh well, I’ll experiment a bit more.

But for now, I might just stick with reading manga at screen-wide.
